"We had a GREAT TIME!!!!! Thank you so much for making the fabulous arrangements for the Rob Roy Ramble. Everyone was so kind and welcoming. Dinners at local restaurants & inns were really good, too. We are so glad we made arrangements through "Make Tracks".

Rob Roy's Ramble

A Short Walking Break in the Scottish Highlands

This short break (3 nights - 3 walking days) takes you into typical scenery of the Scottish Highlands (mountains, lochs and fast flowing rivers), but is really easily accessible for a short break. The walk starts and finishes at Callander, the "gateway to the highlands," less than one hour by car (under 2 hours by public transport) from either Glasgow or Edinburgh. The route takes you through the land of highland legend Rob Roy McGregor, following paths that he followed, and stopping at Balquhidder, where he is now buried in the little kirkyard.

Rob Roy's Ramble - Suggested Itinerary (3 Walking Days - 3 Nights)
Day 1 Arrive Callander One hour from Edinburgh and Glasgow by car (or we can arrange transfers from Stirling or the airports or advise on appropriate public transport).
Day 2 Callander to Balquhidder (14m, 22k) Walk by the Falls of Leny and beautiful Loch Lubnaig. Stop and visit the village of "Bonny Strathyre" and see Rob Roy's Grave by the Braes of Balquhidder
Day 3 Balquhidder to Brig o' Turk (11m, 18k) From Loch Voil, walk through two remote glens, past deserted old highland settlements, and over a mountain pass at 500 metres to arrive at Brig o' Turk
Day 4 Brig o' Turk to Callander (7.5m, 12k) - and depart Callander By the banks of Loch Venachar, looking towards Ben Ledi, the dominant mountain in the area. The walk is quite short and undemanding, leaving you plenty of time for onward travel after arriving at Callander

Getting There

The start and finish points for the Rob Roy Circuit and Ramble is Callander. The nearest big town is Stirling, on the main rail network, and only 30 minutes by train or bus from Glasgow or Edinburgh. At Stirling, the bus stance is right next to the railway station. From here, Firstbus service no. 59 takes about 45 minutes to reach Callander (see timetable). There are additional buses, some of which run on Sundays, and quite late daily (see the Travelline Scotland web site and use the journey planner).
