Day 8Depart Peebles

The holiday starts at Jedburgh, which is easily reached by carfrom the ferry ports or by bus from Edinburgh. The town has its origins in the 12th century when monks started to build the Abbey which still dominates the town. A night in Jedburgh is followed by a day's walk (12 miles) along the banks of 3 different rivers, and on what was once a Roman road to the old market town of St. Boswell's, where youwill spend the second night.

Melrose AbbeyThe next day, you have a choice of walk (about 6 miles each). Both walks take you to Dryburgh Abbey in its magnificent setting by the banks of the River Tweed. One walk takes you through woodland and over the Eildon Hills, while the other keeps to lower ground and past the Roman site at Trimontium before arriving at Melrose. Two nights in Melrose gives you the chance to explore this old town, probably the most beautiful in the area, before walking by a choice of two routes (about 9 miles each) to Selkirk. One route goes back through the Eildon Hills, while the other follows the riverside and an old drove road past Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott which you can visit en-route.

Night 5 is in the old weaving town of Selkirk, still with its mediaeval street pattern in the town centre. The next day's walk is a bracing 14 miles over the Minch Moor Road (now an excellent path, but once used by Kings and cattle drovers alike). Today gives you some of the best views of the week, before spending the 6th night at Traquair, with the chance to visit Traquair House, Scotland's oldest continually inhabited house. The last day gives you the choice of a high level walk (12 miles) or a gentle stroll by the River Tweed to Peebles, where you will spend the last night. Peebles is a bustling and charming small town with good public transport to Edinburgh.
